My incredible naïvete, sucked in as a radical, I thought Chairman Mao was cool, avuncular….the Great Helmsman. This piece is my reminder that ideology can be a cruel weapon. It inspired a bonus chapter from my new book, “In the Small Places: Teacher Changemakers and the Power of Human Agency.”
